Exterior Door Replacement

Hello! Today is a quick blurb showing an exterior door replacement. I’m going to jump right in!

Door Replacement 01: Old door that is improperly sealed and letting water enter basement.

This old door was the original exterior basement door for this older 1960s home. The door had been worked on many times but the old threshold was no longer keeping water out. Every time the lower landing drain clogged there would be interior flooding. We discussed only replacing the threshold and properly weathersealing the old door, but the client decided it was time for a change. We went with a new, energy efficient basement door to help solve those flooding issues once and for all!

Out with the old

The first step is to completely demo the door until the entire cavity is exposed. This includes removing the old threshold and old framing holding the door in place. You want everything to be completely clean before you start to install anything. This is so the new flashing and weathersealing will be absolutely air, and water, tight. Once satisfied, it is time to start the install. The door going in was a pre-hung from Lowes so the necessary framing was already attached to the new door. Should be easy right?

In with the new

This cavity is not large enough for a standard door due to its height of 78.5 inches. This means that this install took quite a bit more work than a regular door installation. Both the door and the frame needed shaving down by 1.5″ with some precision cuts and a proper reassembly. Any mistakes during this process have the potential to ruin the new door and compromise its weatherproofing. But a few cuts and a little bit of time later the new door was ready to go in. Once prepped and ready, you just stand the door into the cavity from the outside and attach it to the existing brick walls. This particular door was a very snug fit so there was no additional framing needed. A lot of caulking and trim work later the exterior door replacement was complete!
