Saving a shed from a fallen tree!

We got a call a while back from a customer who had a big problem. A tree in their back yard had fallen directly on the roof of their shed. While insurance had them covered monetarily, they still needed someone to come clean up the scene. That’s where HandyMAX stepped in to cover them on the hard part, fixing the damage! The Damage

Here is what we first saw when we arrived. Apparently a single wind gust had caused the tops of two trees to break off. One of the trees caused no damage but the other one, unfortunately, fell right into the shed roof. What we found upon further inspection:

  • A giant hole in the main roof
  • The porch had torn away from the shed
  • The porch foundation had been smashed down into the earth
  • The 4×4 support beams for the porch roof were split in the middle
  • All of the screens and laths were broken
  • The screen door was busted

Whew….. we had our work cut out for us.

Repairing all that damage!

The Repairs

We got right to work. First things first, we got that tree out of the hole. It was a bit precarious because, if done incorrectly, the tree had the potential to rip the whole side of the shed off! Fortunately we have ample experience felling trees and had no issues with the tree removal.

We got a temporary patch on the roof and set about shoring up the porch. First, we jacked the porch up to it’s original position, then set new 4x4s, and reattached the bottom of the porch back to the shed. With those steps completed, a new foundation could be set under the front left corner. It was quite the mess. Additionally, we replaced all of the decorative boards, X trusses, lathes, door, and the screen.

Once we secured the porch, we were able to repair the hole in the roof and get a fresh set of shingles set. Job well done! Now I have to apologize, I missed quite a few of my progress pictures (I was busy!) But I did snap a picture of the shed when the client asked me to come back 2 months later to put a fresh coat of paint on it. We left the lath work unpainted to get that “aged wood” appearance over time. I know the siding is still pretty dirty, but hey, it’s a shed! (The client wasn’t worried about the siding)
