Here is a before and after of a recent stair remodel that we completed. The entire staircase was showing it’s age – from the green carpets to the exposed wood wainscoting. The client decided to do a full remodel after we pulled up the stair carpeting and revealing the unsightly original stairs underneath.
We began by grinding the polyurethane coating off the wainscoting (very messy!) and giving it a nice new coat of paint to match the home’s trim. We then replaced each of the risers and put on some nice new oak treads. They were stained a beautiful ebony color to match the rest of the homes flooring.
Once the stairs were installed, the next step was to install the stairs’ skirtboard. This particular project required the skirtboard to go on after the treads which makes it particularly difficult to get right (but is also quite fun!). The home was built in the 1950s so each tread and riser was a slightly different size. This required the skirtboard to be cut slightly different for each stair. Additionally the board has to match any minute differences in each treads overhang. The solution is a scribing process that effectively draws the staircase onto the skirtboard. The next step involves some precision cutting to get the fit just right.
After some touch up caulking and trim painting, this staircase was good to go. I’m quite please with the final product for this project and I know that the homeowner was too.
